It's religious. The academic system is descended from Akademos, a grove near Athens, sacred to Athena the goddess of wisdom. Membership was by invitation only and members claimed ownership of all knowledge, by which they meant stuff they had made up by their own powers of reasoning. Knowledge obtained by experience and observation were left to tradesmen and servants.
