if true it really puts a spotlight on the medusa story, since it would tie in the mythology work done here , and the turning things to stone myth with the gaze of medusa, which would be some form of extreme electrical discharge raining down on the earth.

I was thinking plasma streamers as has been suggested.
the gaze would be the arc discharge.
if you can petrify wood with electrical discharge from a powerline, it seems plausible that a planetary scale discharge could do it as well.
