Useful pictorial/science resources...
Posted: Fri May 11, 2007 5:24 pm Post subject: Useful pictorial/science resources...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Though not specifically aimed at the Electric Universe, here is a general resource guide for astronomical images/data, both of local planetary bodies, comets, moons, and for deep-space objects...
Basically, I want the public to have access to what we have access to. Lots of GREAT raw data out there. Too much for anyone person, site, agency to hoard or even to process it all.
Pardon my "thoroughness..."
Raw photos (some with captions; others not so much):

Addendum, perhaps a moderator can make this thread/topic "sticky" so it stays at the top in the forum. Good resources for those interested in raw data...
Likewise, folks with other good pictorial resources, or other science-related & "reliable" (raw-data?) resources may feel free to post and add resources. Perhaps I'll amend the list above as additional, suitable resources come in? Hope this is useful for all!

No problem. I've always been one for "playing fair." Toward that end, I figure we might as well go back to the "raw data" and see what's up.
Of late, I'm especially fond of HiRISE zoomable images at the marsoweb.nas.nasa.gov site, as you can tunnel right down to ground level and see things in such clarity as to go "Huh? What's going on here? There are no LAVA TUBES/"VENTS" on Arsia Mons" ;o] Etc. Though there is some pretty cool "cellular / polygonal" terrain at ground level in the "vent" picture, when you zoom in far enough. Not unlike the pattern created roundsabouts the solar photosphere... *Innocent look.* What? I'm just saying is all...
(Zoom all the way in on the vent and two craters to see what you can see... Omnipresently pockmarked/cellular surface.)
http://marsoweb.nas.nasa.gov/HiRISE/hir ... 2157_1715/
(Solar photosphere/sunspots/penumbra? More interested in the photos than the articles. Though the articles are mildly interesting as well...)
http://thunderbolts.info/tpod/2006/arch ... numbra.htm
http://thunderbolts.info/tpod/2005/arch ... unspot.htm
http://thunderbolts.info/tpod/2006/arch ... nspots.htm
Am I wrong? Okay, okay, that should be for another topic... ;o) (Another topic it is" [OLD FORUM]http://web4.ehost-services.com/rainbow1 ... .php?t=102)
Anywho, glad the raw data links might be helpful.
Come to think of it, I rather like the teslamania.com (or equivalent IP address it seems to like transitioning to for some reason) site...
Especially:
http://205.243.100.155/frames/lichtenbergs.html
http://205.243.100.155/frames/shrinker.html
http://205.243.100.155/frames/Shrinking_History.htm
http://205.243.100.155/frames/pasley.html
http://205.243.100.155/frames/whatis.html
For some reason, I simply find Lichtenberg figures to be quite interesting... As well as anythingthat goes boom, bright flashy things, large electric arcs & sparks (so long as I'm nowhere near them ;o] )...

Updated "Specific Missions" section to include "New Horizons," submitted by a user in a different forum/thread. Hats off to them.
also made minor edit to use BBcode for links, to make sure all links work properly. HAve noticed that certain characters aren't interpreted as part of an address unless used in a specific way in a BBcode tag. All links should be working now, I think.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Added "Aladin Sky Atlas" software to 'Miscellaneous' section.
Apparently geared toward being as comprehensive a deep-sky atlas as possible for obtaining and viewing most/any/all images taken over a massive portion of the sky in various wavelengths. See their FAQ for more info.
Cheers,

Added a bunch of specific missions, including STEREO, SOHO, ULYSSES, Mars Global Surveyor (MGS), etc.
Also added a couple image resources.
Here's a brief snippet of info on Martian Dust Devils as seen by rovers or MGS {?}. Too little info to necessarily be a full-blown resources. But interesting anyway. As a few videos show the dust devils flashing or interacting with the ground at the base. Pretty compelling stuff. How can this get ignored?

Anyone got other resources? Missions, raw data, etc? Post up!
Cheers,
~Michael
Addendum, found this page quite handy. Added a number of resources from it:

I seem to have found a few new resources...
(EarthSLOT; Virtual Globes to help scientists, resource managers, educators, and the public better understand our planet and the earth science that goes on here)
http://www.earthslot.org/index.php
(GeoFusion; 3D globes and some other resources, may not be "free.")
(Lunar Map Catalog; )
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/resources/mapcatalog/
(Lunar and Planetary Institute; see their "Resources" menu for some good links)
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/
(TerraExplorer; 3D globes, may not be "free.")

Sorry, that's all I'd saved to my hard drive.

"Xenon on the Verge of an Electric Breakdown"
"In carefully designed lab experiments the region between a pair of electrodes fills with plasma smoothly, starting at the positive end, with a wave front that sweeps quickly across to the negative end."
"At the leading edge of this so-called ionization front is a narrow band of enhanced electric field, according to theory and indirect experiments, but theorists only vaguely understand what determines the field's profile."

A list of interesting publications relating electricity / plasmas on Earth, in space, etc... Copied from another thread, since I thought they were quite interesting.

I wrote:Well, these are pretty darn cool {!}:
(Executive Summary for "The Earth's Electrical Environment (1986)")

(Full version; have to pat to buy full PDF version of the book, but you can read or skim chapters for free!)

(So too: Plasma Science - Advancing knowledge in the national interest. Has a section on astrophysical plasma. Currently in pre-print?)

(Plasma Physics of the Local Cosmos)

(The Atmospheric Sciences: Entering the Twenty-First Century)

(The Geomagnetic Initiative)

(Solar Influences on Global Change)

(Plasma Science: From Fundamental Research to Technological Applications)

Some of these seems to include elements that seem to get glossed over in most "mainstream" publications. So, it's "out there," but not necessarily widely known. I did notice a tendency to talk in terms of "bow shocks" and reconnection in a few places. But a lot of stuff seems to be coming into line. Slowly... Very slowly. Soon it'll be "well, we knew this all along!"
