Bad Astronomy

A couple of months ago, BAbloggee Henrik Magnus Ulriksen sent me a link to a video of a cloud that frankly left me — har har — twisting in the wind. When I saw it, I had the strong feeling it was authentic; taken with a hand-held camera, it doesn’t look obviously faked. But what it shows is very odd indeed.

The video is of a cumulonimbus cloud, a puffy white cauliflower-shaped cloud that forms when warm air rises rapidly. The camera view is between two buildings, and you can see the puffy cloud top just below the center of the frame. Keep your eye on the little wisp of cloud just above the cumulonimbus, right in the middle of the frame.

Assuming the video is real, I had a sneaky suspicion it had to do with the electric currents generated inside the cloud, the same currents that create lightning. Clouds can carry huge electric potentials — essentially, the ability to move charges around — and that stored energy can be suddenly released, creating lightning. When that happens, the electric field resets itself, and starts to store up energy again.

But I had no clue how that would make the cloud appear to dance like that!

As it happens, by coincidence, I met Joel Gratz at the TEDxBoulder talk in September. Joel is a meteorologist who runs websites like Open Snow and Colorado Powder Forecast. I sent him the video, and sure enough a short while later he had a reply for me.

Joel had sent the video to Walter Lyons, a meteorologist from WeatherVideoHD, who was able to identify this phenomenon. Here’s his reply:

The answer lies in this: ice crystals, especially long needles, tend to become aligned with the ambient electric field.

So what you are seeing is sunlight reflecting off ice crystal faces that are constantly being oriented by the developing electric field just above the [cumulonimbus] top. Then there is a discharge in the cloud, and the field collapses momentarily, and the crystals begin to realign again. Then this just keeps happening over and over.

Aha! I hadn’t thought of that. The outer surface of ice crystals can hold a static electric charge, similar to what happens when you rub a glass rod with a cloth, or rub a balloon on your hair and stick it to the wall. When placed in an electric field, the charges feel a force on them, and align themselves along the field. So all the ice crystals above that cloud top are aligned one way in the field. Then the field snaps (maybe due to lightning releasing the energy) and then reforms. The ice crystals change their orientation suddenly when that happens.

So why does it look like the entire shape is changing? That’s because ice crystals can act like little prisms, bending light when it passes through them (or they can act like mirrors, with light reflecting off their flat surfaces). When they float in the air you get all sorts of astounding and beautiful formations like sun dogs, halos, sun pillars, and more. These all depend on the angle between you, the Sun, and the orientation of the crystal in between.

[UPDATE: Bill Beatty has more videos of this phenomenon. Thanks to @MattTheTube for the tip.]

In this case, some of the ice crystals are bending light toward the camera, and when the field snaps they rearrange themselves. Think of them like little flashlights, some pointed at you, some away. When the field changes, they all turn, so different ones are pointed at you, and ones that were pointed at you are now turned away. That’s what happens when the field suddenly changes. The overall shape of the cloud hasn’t changed; you’re just seeing the light coming from it differently!

I want to take a moment here and relay the fact that this is one of the coolest things I have ever heard. That video is truly bizarre (I’ve seen more than one website — the kind that talks about "chemtrails" seriously — touting it as some sort of government conspiracy), It shows something I had never seen before, or even dreamed of. Mind you, I’m pretty familiar with the sky; I spend a lot of time looking at it. So this was pretty weird. Then to get an explanation that is not only, to me, obviously correct, but also so simple, so clean, and so wonderful… well, that’s one of the things I love most about science.

Some people think that science takes away the beauty and wonder of the world, but it doesn’t. It adds to it. It takes something we don’t understand and turns it into something we do. Instead of spinning conspiracy theories, we can use science to help us construct a more accurate, more complete, and more true view of the Universe.

And yes, more beautiful as well. I’ll take the beauty of truth any day of the week. Even a cloudy one. ... d3IMvmLAaD

"Scientists surprised"?
Well, the canyon might be as young as thousands of years and affected by just one or two glaciations.

I have a question concerning "geoneutrinos."

I had thought neutrinos were extremely elusive particles. How can researchers tell the source—Sun, Earth or elsewhere? Are they detectably directional? Even so, how can one tell a Solar neutrino from a geoneutrino, assuming various orientations of the Earth to the Sun, and the location of the detector? Is there some aspect of neutrinos that changes after they are emitted so that one might know how long since?

The researchers estimate that the other half of the earth's heat comes from primordial sources left over when the earth formed and from other sources of heat.
We have a constant electrical input. What percentage comes from that? :?

None, none at all. That's all hot gas and reconnecting magnetic fields. Everyone knows that carbon dioxide is solely responsible for Earth's retained heat.

See original post on page two of this combined thread.

If the electrical effect would actually be studied and understood then real predictions and warnings could be made in ample time. Even measure the magnetic field like in the desert dust devil experiments would give a much sooner indication! They have a sensor grid across the whole state in order to detect lightning so its not like it couldn't be done.
Anyways, with NASA's recent admission of numerous electrical effects on the moon when it goes through the tail of the earth, ... 123319.htm, this correlation between the moon and storms should not be ignored.
This is an update on the Hypersensitive Solar System 2014

Another monsoon year has shown again the moon's influence on the formation
of severe storms, especially evident here in Arizona.

In combination with the dry climate of Arizona and the earth's transition through
summer solstics along with the moon's passage through new and full orientation,
there have been some real extreme storms this year (2014) with dust storm
accompanyment as well as spin-offs, associated with what meteorologists
are calling micro & macro bursts, but weather-folks too often neglect saying anything about
the spin-offs -a dust devil-like event with far more extreme winds and damage,,
sometimes sounding "just like a tornado"...
I wonder if insurance underwriters have influence on how events are classified,,,
but i will avoid that tangent,, for now..

Recent experiments -done my mr2tuff, do much more to show the electrical potential and
interactions that might be applicable to the dust storm events (haboobs), than those done
by me on a CRT surface, but they both match what is seen in Arizona, Iran, Kuwait and
elsewhere.. Here is a link to his videos;

So this has been an update on the Hypersensitive Solar System with the following addition
being of potential importance to all gravity attenuation discussions.

Air tides,,, a portion of a presentation on Monsoons by Ken Ring
Nobody disputes that the Moon pulls the tides. As Moon’s forces must go through the air to reach the water, and so must also be pulling the air. Also, the surface of the water is in interface with the bottom of the air, and this is over 75% of the surface of the planet that we call ocean. So, as weather is a function of what happens in the air, does the Moon affect weather? It would be weird if the Moon, at between a third and a quarter the size of Earth, sitting only 10 earth circumferences away, did not have some effect on earth and everything on the Earth, including the air. Meteorologists do know that weather balloons float higher on New and Full moon days, suggesting a king tide in the air at the same times as a king tide at the coast, but they keep this to themselves.
I do not know why there is such as effect upon the weather balloon but it does to some degree support
observations made over the years including one during the month of August (i think) and a baseball season's
record breaking period of total home runs across the league for a given period.. This coincided with the
alignment of several of the major planets to one side of the sun..
Some day i might find the details of that post to another forum which has been buried,,,
Until then keep your score card close at hand.. d...z

The Earth Rang Like A Bell

Unread post by Riotboy » Sat Dec 01, 2018 8:37 am

On November 11, 2018 the Earth rang like a bell for about 20 minutes. Seismic waves were picked up across the planet from Canada, New Zealand, Chile, Hawaii, etc., and the strongest in Mayotte between Africa and Managascar. According to on 11-11-18 Venus, the Earth, and Uranus were in a straight line and most likely this caused the vibrating resonance on the Earth (my hypothesis).

The Moon also rang like bell for about an hour in March 1970 when NASA crashed one of its spacecrafts into the surface.

My comment is somewhat tangential to the main thread.
According to on 11-11-18 Venus, the Earth, and Uranus were in a straight line
Taken from The Planets Today:
Both apps show a solar system map - a "plan view" of the planets laid out in the plane of the ecliptic (the flat plane in which all the main planets move about the Sun).

Dwarf planet positions are also shown - but it should be realised that these objects often rise far above and below the plane of the ecliptic. This is because their orbital planes are tilted with respect to the ecliptic - by more than 40 degrees in some cases. So be aware that just because the app may occasionally show a planet and a dwarf planet to be very close to each other in the plan view, they may, in fact, be separated by a large perpendicular distance.
Just as the dwarf planets may be separated by a large perpendicular distance due to there orbital tilt to the ecliptic,I suggest the perpendicular positions of the main planets are not necessarily "in a straight line" either.
Jupiter, for example, changes its perpendicular position by a total of approx. 100 million miles.

The perpendicular distance of the planets are almost always assumed to be on the ecliptic or on the solar equatorial plane (ie. non existent) in everything I have read in the last ten years. I suggest the changing perpendicular distances, and changing solar magnetic field polarity positions contribute to the complex electrical nature of the solar system.

I just read about this in NewScientist ... the waves appeared to have originated off the coast of Madagascar and moved unilaterally from there.

A number of researchers have made note of the Venus/Full Moon conjunction and historic epidemics - occurring shortly afterwards (3 months)
