The new view could reveal connections previously overlooked. For instance, researchers have long suspected that solar activity can "go global," with eruptions on opposite sides of the sun triggering and feeding off of one another. Now they can actually study the phenomenon. The Great Eruption of August 2010 engulfed about 2/3rd of the stellar surface with dozens of mutually interacting flares, shock waves, and reverberating filaments. Much of the action was hidden from Earth, but plainly visible to the STEREO-SDO fleet.
"There are many fundamental puzzles underlying solar activity," says Vourlidas. "By monitoring the whole sun, we can find missing pieces."
Researchers say these first-look images are just a hint of what's to come. Movies with higher resolution and more action will be released in the weeks ahead as more data are processed. Stay tuned!

Re: MEGA SOLAR FILAMENT; let's observe this one
Wow!
IF you look at the velocity part of the animation, the first CME comes out of the pit slow then speeds up. The second CME is right behind it ( no idea of time scale). The second has instant acceleration significantly before the first, and actually catches up by the time it reached the earths orbital distance. So absolutely cool. Is this an example of acceleration of ions through the suns DL ?

Sun unleashes huge solar flare
Maybe this will be useful to readers...
Sun unleashes huge solar flare
The Sun has unleashed its strongest flare in four years, observers say.
The eruption is a so-called X-flare, the strongest type; such flares can affect communications on Earth.
Nasa's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft recorded an intense flash of extreme ultraviolet radiation emanating from a sunspot.
The British Geological Survey (BGS) has issued a geomagnetic storm warning, and says observers might be able to see aurorae from the northern UK.
The monster flare was recorded at 0156 GMT on 15 February and directed at the Earth.

I guess that means we're going to see extreme weather patterns, vulcanic activity and earthquakes in a couple of days...

Have a look at this and see what you think (just the footage as to its claim of missing “data” and the orientation issue that is used to support that claim,... “turning “ the image around to “hide” the event ,...)
If the “flash’s” shown are genuine and not an artefact from the image processing or something else mundane, then it kinda answer’s a question Ive had rattling around for a while, I have not seen a flash like t5his from anywhere before, and while looking at an EU photograph from a TB thread, (cant remember exactly where) showing a plasma experiment that explains the formating of a “magnetic-loop”, I thought I may be missing something as these loops look to start from a point , rise up and fall back, and the plasma image showed two spikes rising independently then connecting at the top, (falling into each other) then showing a bright “knot” (plasmoid?) at the connection point .... I coild never reconcile that image with the way a ML is shown from footage off SOHO etc , ..... can the loops form in different ways depending on the amount of energy coursing about the area? ...

having just watched your clip allyhn it does seem to have a ""flash" component for the big events?
cheers

Whatever the claims of the makers of these videos, I believe the parsimonious explanation may be new plasma/planets fissioned off from the Sun, balancing gravity with electromagnetic forces. That's assuming the spheres aren't faked.

Re: Sun unleashes huge solar flare
I just started reading The Sun Kings by Stuart Clark. I got to page 15 last night and wanted to just sit and read the book today, but this morning I got sidetracked chasing down links on early human history, back to at least 200,000 years ago; but I digress.
The book is about a similar flare event that occurred in 1859 that caused massive effects in the relatively non-electricaly technology world of the day. By page 15 the astronomer has seen exactly the kind of flash you guys are talking about. I don't expect the story to end well for Carrington. I hope to read the book tomorrow and see.

BTW, The day after the current flare people here in Santa Fe were having trouble buying stuff at the stores. All over town the microwave system that links the stores to the card vendor were being overwhelmed by the noise from the flare. We are at 7,000 feet elevation here, and thus closer to events.
In looking at the various posted video links that you guys mentioned, I saw this one.

Re: Sun unleashes huge solar flare
Just a short week after the X-Class flare, here's North America's weather going from a full-on melt in the upper Midwest to dumping 2 feet of snow + another six feet of snow blowing in from 3 counties away! >.<
I've spent 4 hours the past two days shoveling about a full ton of snow... My back is reminding me how old I'm getting!
I don't suppose anyone knows what that one fella in Great Britain was predicting for weather in the wake of that solar mess was, do they?

Thanks for that, Stickwhistler! I figured there would be a big mess once I read that article regarding that X-Class flare.
On a much more somber note- wasn't there a huge quake Down Under somewhere that caused a whole bunch of grief that was also in the wake of this flare? :\

Re: Sun unleashes huge solar flare
It is snowing here in Amsterdam right now too.
So I guess we have extreme weather patterns (snow storms in US), we saw a couple of earthquakes (One in the south of the US and in New Sealand where a lot of people sufferd ) and there were electronic-equipment-failure warnings from the authorities.
If there is any correlation? And is this being investigated by any scientific organisation?
Because for the people in New Sealand a warning in advance would have been helpful.

A news paper in the UK stopped betting about weatherforcasts with him; he seemed to win them constantly.stickwhistler wrote:Latest report from weather action dot com and Piers Corbyn

Would you know of any climate or weather scientist who does the same?

Re: Sun unleashes huge solar flare
We too are under heavy snow today on the Canadian SW coast, and expecting
some very cold, for us, (-8C) temperatures. I've been watching the
masses of cold air sweeping down from the north over the last while, and
reasoned, correctly or not, that if cold protons are streaming down to the
poles, causing the aurora, then there will also be a cooling of the air
in the process. Charge exchange, heat extraction. Is this too simplistic
an explanation? The deep permafrost under the polar auroral oval, would
be from electronic cooling too, no?

In order to change an existing paradigm you do not struggle to try and change the problematic model. You create a new model and make the old one obsolete. -Buckminster Fuller
