Galactic Maelstrom

Hundreds of TPODs have been published since the summer of 2004. In particular, we invite discussion of present and recent TPODs, perhaps with additional links to earlier TPOD pages. Suggestions for future pages will be welcome. Effective TPOD drafts will be MORE than welcome and could be your opportunity to become a more active part of the Thunderbolts team.

M51 (NGC 5194), the Whirlpool Galaxy and its companion M51b.

What evidence is there that M51b is a companion?

What qualifies as a companion? :?

Surprisingly found this definition sparky :
4: a celestial body that appears close to another but that may or may not be associated with it in space
So I guess the answer is nothing qualifies it except the way it looks to you Sparky.

I vote we remove the term "companion" from scientific vocabulary along with "ionized gas."

Looks like M51b is physically connected to one of the spiral arms of M51.
