In order to speculate what it could be, it'd be nice to have more specific information - more than just, "not in the visible spectrum."
My wild guess:
Some type of ionizing cosmic ray impacting the ionosphere, briefly creating a mini-aurora at the impact site.
I assume light emission from an aurora can be anywhere on the EM spectrum, and shouldn't be limited to visible light.
Is my assumption here correct?

He said he was viewing in infa-red and ultraviolet. Thanks for the reply, that is along the same lines I was thinking.
